BOOK of the Month: Chico & Rita- A Graphic Novel by Javier Mariscal & Fernando Trueba

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVED the film.. But there is something about reading a Graphic Novel. The story is classic and beautiful. I mean a story about MUSIC, LOVE, NEW YORK & CUBA.. cant really get any better to be honest!

The Guardian- "Sexy, sunny and sweet-natured, this lovely animation by film-maker Fernando Trueba and artist and designer Javier Mariscal is a 1940s love story with all the brassy passion of a Barry Manilow number, set in the nightclubs of Havana and New York. Rita, voiced by Limara Meneses, is a beautiful Cuban singer who has to scrape a living; Chico (Eman Xor Oña) is a talented, underemployed pianist thunderstruck with love for Rita when she meanders on stage for a solo. Their passionate affair and professional partnership is endangered when a smooth-talking Yankee impresario tells Rita he can take her to showbiz glory in New York, but has no interest in lover-boy Chico coming along as well. There is a wonderful set-piece when Chico offers to fill in one night for an absent musician in the Woody Herman Orchestra, breezily confident he can busk his way through any jazz number – only to discover he is expected to sight-read the piano part in Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto. The great names of both Cuban and American jazz are invoked, and Chico and Rita's tragicomic love story meshes very pleasingly with this musical backdrop. There is heartbreak, but a happy ending."

ON HIS PASSION FOR ART...
I make collection, I've always been truly passionate, in the global sense. Doing photography is one of those things that makes me feel alive. but i recently created my company to edit and publish books. I learn t photography by myself, left school before the Baccalauréat ( french graduation. ) When it comes to art and photography i mostly follow my own feelings. Energy and emotions. i only work with analog cameras and VHS, paper. I love the smell, that i can touch it. i really appreciate works from Nan Goldin, Araki Nobuyoshi, Boris Vian, Auguste Rodin, Egon Schiele, Romain Gary, Jean Cocteau, Josh Safdie, Estelle Hanania.. and also recent publications such as Frederic Magazine.

What i really love is that people could really digg the emotions from the moment, and feel are watching real life and not a captured moment of life. So they can imagine the before and the after, and everyone get to picture a different thing, but everyone feels he could be right.

I had the pleasure in taking a trip to The Guardian Newsroom in Kings Cross. I was really exited for this trip because I have always had the passion for journalism and media writing.

As I entered the venue, there was such presence and buzz, I knew this was going to be a worth while afternoon.

There was an interesting talk from one of the leaders about their workshop program they do with schools and colleges.

One of the activities they do with schools is to report news, use research, write and edit stories and create headlines, selecting different pictures to go with the article.

We had the opportunity to create our own Newspaper page on the computers provided, and we even got to print off a copy for ourselves to keep!

I remember reading this article in SNEAKER FREAKER about Marty Mcflys iconic NIKE sneakers in BACK TO THE FUTURE 11 ... I am a HUGE fan of the movies and the whole culture behind it so i was amazingly exited and happy to hear that The NIKE MAG would no longer be the "greatest shoe never made."

1500 pairs of the mythical shoe that originally captured the imagination of audiences 2011 NIKE MAG was auctioned on eBay with all net proceeds going directly to The Michael J. Fox Foundation. Each day for the duration of the ten-day auction, one hundred and fifty pairs of the 2011 NIKE MAG shoes were being made available via eBay's Fashion Vault. The auction started September 8 and ended September 18.

The original NIKE MAG was worn by the Back to the Future character Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, in the year 2015. It came alive, lit up and formed to Marty's foot. The 2011 NIKE MAG shoe was designed to be a precise replica of the original from Back to the Future II. The aesthetic is an exact match, down to the contours of the upper, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent NIKE in the strap. The 2011 NIKE MAG illuminates with the pinch of the "ear" of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge.

Okay so I haven't blogged in quite a while because I have been mad busy studying to become a teacher!!!!! soo exited! Hard work but rewarding stuff!!

So in this spare bit of time I have I like to talk about my visit a while back to this amazing CHANEL pop up exhibition at Harrods!!!

Renound for her immaculate style and innovative designs, the label created by Coco Chanel in the 1920s remains one of the most popular fashion houses in the world. Celebrating that fact, Harrods was taken over by the famous intertwined Cs and Karl Lagerfeld designs, with Chanel themed windows, art installations and two pop up boutiques in the store.

The installations
With the Brompton Road windows and eight separate rooms dedicated to the world of Chanel, there is enough designer decadence on show at the Chanel pop up at Harrods for even the most glamorous fashionista. A Camelia room celebrates the designer's favourite flower with items such as a quilted watering can and a white gold camelia tree on show; the Tweed Room marks the year in which Chanel created her very own tweed; the 2.55 Room is a recreation of the interior of a famous 2.55 bag, complete with videos of the bags being made; and lastly the Chanel No. 5 Room features posters designed by Andy Warhol and a litre sized bottle of Marilyn Monroe's favourite scent.

Once you've been inspired by all the style and luxury of the installations, the next stop is the Chanel pop up boutiques where you can get your hands on both the fashion and beauty icons. With a limited edition Chanel 2.55 bag in Harrods green for sale, alongside accessories, shoes and fine jewellery set against a magical forest scene, you feel like treating yourself to a little designer something at the Chanel pop up at Harrods. That's if you have money!

I found out about JCOLE about a year and a bit ago by mistake on purely watching some videos on the wonderful world of YOUTUBE

...

It was around the time I started to be real heavy on one of my fave rappers BLU and i was listening to non stop of that..COLE'S video to his track "Simba"... I remember thinking this cat is pretty dope..
I kinda of discovered his Mixtapes in the wrong order..starting with "Friday Night Lights", "The Come Up" and THEN "The Warm up"!!!

When "WHO DAT?" dropped on the scene officially I was soo damn impressed. LOVED the song,, really LOVED the vibe of the video... It was on REPEAT on my Ipod for at least 2 months! FACT.

We live in a mainstream controlled sad sad world where new good music MOST of the time isn't recognized. I and soo many others were hot on COLE but the mass mundane mainstream lot weren't interested- and well basically they for now RULE how music goes, so this cat was bringing out so much mad good shit but there was no mainstream nod. YET.

He dropped "Work Out" which has more mainstream appeal and then "Can't get enough" BAM! That other world began to recognize!

I have been listening to the album over and over again its hard to pick but my faves are "Sideline Story" "Lost Ones", old school vibes with vocals and amazing vibes from MISS ELLIOT on "Nobody's perfect"... collectively it a well put together TIGHT album!

I feel like I and loads of other true fans have been with him (musically) through his journey to success and now that he has hit TOP we're all Happy.

SO GO BUY THIS ALBUM!!! GO OUT AND BUY A HARD FREAKIN COPY.. its worth it! Support REAL talent.

Two life long friends, Press1 (Yusuf. K Mouharrem) and Lenz Wan (Craig Bynoe) joined together in the summer of 2010 to form Camouflage Children.
Lenz Wan, 24, South East London spent early 2010 working on an acoustic guitar/rap duo with Nick Dare. Honing his skills over the London open mic circuit, tearing down many a venue in the process and honing his original style.
Press1, 24, South East London is known for taking part in countless MC battles held on the London underground rap scene, competing at Jump Off, Don’t Flop, Battlescars, Lyric Pad, Fight Klub UK etc. and has faced revered opponents such as Skinnyman, Professor Green, Verb T and Cruger.
After spending in excess of 8 years of rapping together they decided to enter a ‘Battle Of The Bands’ competition that took place in the o2 Arena – after successfully getting through the initial rounds they went on to take 1st place. By summer 2011 they have already performed shows at renowned London clubs and live music venues such as The Jazz Café, XOYO, Camden Rocks, Cargo, Vibe Bar and have supported acts including Magnetic Man, XO Man, Mikill Pane and DJ Snips.
On the 16th September 2011, Camouflage Children release their debut mix tape entitled ‘Bangalore Vol.1’. A good friend of mine introduced me to Blu's mixtapes a while ago,and more recently "Below the heavens" with Exile and I have been hooked on this MC ever since. In fact he is now in my top 5 MC's of all time!

This album "No York" is nothing that you have heard from Blu before... far from his jazz mixed infused style he changes it up with a more alternative, electro industrial alternative style of HipHop..
With his mixtapes (which i love as well) its all kind of a long journey, each track links on to one another. With this album each song has a totally different style so you kinda don't know what to expect next... I think that's what puts the album together well and makes the albums structure and narrative clearer.

I think a lot of cats wont understand it at first and find it a bit out there, but if your into music from the likes of N*E*R*D, J*DaVey, Santagold even a bit of Janelle Monae you will LOVE this album.. its truly ALL THAT!

I love how he still keeps his jazz roots with like
"K e e p P u s h i n g", goes all techno with like "A n n i e H a l l " goes new soul on "D o w n t o e a r t h", goes all funky with "J a z z M e n"...

"My Sunshine" just makes me keep smiling...

So on that note Go get it or download it!!! I myself want a hard copy maybe even a 12 inch vinyl of it to sit nicely with my collection!

I am Belinda K. Zhawi , from South East London via Harare Zimbabwe. I’d say I’m Sensitive, loud, unfunny, hungry and spiritual.
I don't really have a personal style; I love clothes and dressing up, blurring lines. I'm a bit of an exhibitionist so I end up wearing weird shit sometimes but I don't really have a set personal style.

Right now I love MF DOOM - MM... FOOD and Jay Z & Kanye - Watch the Throne.

My ART HUSTLE comes in the form of telling stories through POETRY and prose. I have been making art about 6 years not counting the years I thought I could MC. I draw inspiration from past experiences and my surroundings. I am also inspired by good writing and storytelling.

I have been working with The Rubix Collective for the past year just writing. We put on a show called House Party at The Roundhouse a few months ago, so am working on further material to make it a bigger show. I am also, always writing in a bid to get better which can be frustrating.

I love The Southbank Centre I always get some sort of inspiration there! The R.A.P. Party was a gig I went to there that left me in tears and feeling motivated. There also was this really good exhibition called The Falling Up exhibition at the Courtald Gallery, that was was amazing and I wrote a few pieces inspired from that.

I love writing because the feeling I get after finishing a piece doesn't compare to anything else. I love sharing myself through writing and always hoping that there is someone out there who can relate.

Kay has been involved in art from a young age, this developing her talent in painting.

ART HUSTLER
I have always had a creative eye. I never leave home with out a camera so photography is always playing a big part in my creative journey. I spend a lot of my time locked up in my bedroom painting, illustrating and on my sewing machine. My mind never stops even when am at rest. I am a huge fan of music and love to dance. I've been dancing since the age of 15 and it's remained a hobby ever since. This has all lead to so many different opportunities from teaching to performing.

BEING INSPIRED...
'Life' Life is the best exhibition any one could ever visit. We meet new people, we see new things... I think it's important to acknowledge your surroundings and senses. One of the reasons why I am in love with capturing art is because it keeps a record of how I feel and what I see.
I love artists such as Salvador Dali and Freda Khalo; not only do they have incredible paintings skills but their minds are in a place where they can connect with a broad audience.

I start my B.A in Textiles at Central Saint Martins in September. Having the opportunity for the staff and pupils to see my work means a lot to me. During this summer I’ve had work displayed at Shoreditch House during a monthly music event Called Wired. It was tribute painting of Amy Winehouse. I have also done live art which took place at Queen of Hoxton for an event called Art To East Africa, both these pieces have now gone to charity.

Just being able to express myself and have an audience appreciate my art is a blessing. It makes me glad to know that people sometimes look beyond the actual intention and educate me a little about my own work. Painting especially is a way for me to vent and speak my mind with out having to say a word. Being able to trigger a thought or even inspire someone is the best feelings I have ever had.
I recently did a painting of Tyler The Creator which he now owns. The whole situation still kind of has me gob smacked. So I am beyond grateful.

I introduce you to you a Thailand original. A young talented innovative stylist.

This is Aük.

He describes his personal style is collective. “Usually I tend to throw thing together and build a look around whatever I’ve found from places. It’s more of a nomadic living. It wasn’t restricted to any particular trend or anything.”

What does Self expression mean to you?
‘It’s a creative force that runs through our individual consciousness. It’s become a huge part of our life, as people we’re always wanted to learn something from one another in order to move forward so it’s important that we share this great quality and in fashion it is exactly just that.’

Auk was introduced to styling and photography from friend Naomi James (who ArtHustle interviewed a while back). ‘I have been doing styling and making images for almost a year now.”

Constantly styling and making good images Auk is drawn to many different elements that inspire him within his work. ‘Life on the street fascinated me and has always been a great inspiration for me. It’s a living library from my point of view especially cultures here in London.’

Are there any other, countries apart from London that you draw your inspiration from, or would love to work around?
‘I would love to visit remote places around Middle East and Peru. The myth of culture interest me the most.’

Speaking of street style, tell me about one of the projects you have worked on around this subject matter.
‘There was a shoot titled ‘IMPRINTING’ that I did at Kidbrooke, Ferrier Estate with Naomi (James) back in January. The estate was abandon for quite sometime now but me and Naomi decided to shoot there as we felt there was a great harmony and history left behind. It was a great fun for us.”

Being Inspired...
I admire people like Panos Yiapanis and Samuel Drira. I’ve found their work rare and honest and that is something I have always wanted to capture every time I work, style images that speak for itself.’

AND lastly...
”The one ting I love about what I do is the people and my love for creating. I can’t stop working. It has integrated in me at some point.”

In reflection, when I set up this blog there was a bunch of us really wanting to hustle this idea of creating ART, spreading the ART wave, meeting fellow ART freaks like us...Being this team of ART HUSTLERS...it worked for a while then like a typical boyband we all grew up and some of us went our separate ways....you know the score...

Now there is two of us left, myself and the beautifully inspirational talented Toyin Kenny, we are more stronger as a unit.

I can say on behalf of both of us both we feel privileged and happy that our vision is expanding and that we are discovering new and amazing things, meeting loads of talented unique art heads, and still keeping the ART HUSTLE spirit up. Lets keep breaking boundaries and now spread ART to the world beyond the ART community.

I Have always been into art!! My Nan started off showing me how to draw flowers and horses... I was really young so I was heavily influenced by Fine art at first. When I got into my teens I met new and interesting people, Graffiti art became the way forward for me in expressing myself and experimenting with a new art form. From that it lead to an interest in illustration and pop art.

Tattoos
I got my first tattoo when I was 16, it was this really tacky dragon on my hip! ..I was in it for the thrill mostly at that time...I've always played instruments and at that time I was seriously into piano so I got music bars on my wrists.
From my second tattoo onwards my tattoos all mark a particular time in my life.

People don't expect but I'm a pretty shy introverted person,and the way I express myself with is by body modification art.ART is all I know and is the ONE thing I can do to express myself and just be 'me', pushing boundaries, being unique! ART is so limitless and open so when I cant find the right way to show what I feel there is always an art form that can do it for me, be it a painting or a tattoo.

My piercings are mostly decoration but my septum piercing was the only one I got with a reason, many ancient tribes had them to appear stronger to strike fear in fellow tribes so warriors had them and the bigger the bone/ring the higher rank warrior.. so its kind of like my war paint/symbol for life's challenges. I didn't always want to be a Tattoo Artist because I never really believed I was capable of doing it or disciplined enough, I did for a while want to be a theater technician, backstage, lights, stage management. I sometimes volunteer at theaters because I like to keep my options open and love the arts community.

When you see ALANI ADENLE, you see GREAT style. His outfits stand out because of his unique quirkiness and amazing, vibrant individualism, staight away anybody can tell his style is truly his own. Adenle combines vintage with some High street pieces, but wears his clothes in an unusual yet stylish manner. He studies at the UEl and is also working on a modelling portfolio.

I asked about his inspiration when it comes to his relation to fashion, rather than giving me some random celebrity name like everybody does he mentions that he is inspired by "the people and the world around him". He aims to become a fashion inspiration to people as well, according to him his clothes are an extension of him. "My clothes shows my charisma .. Shows who I am and what I am" it also show his creativity.
He does confess to liking the movie "Sherlock Holmes" because of the main character's sense of style and of course for the story as well! I love tatoots and was intrigued by his tatoots and piercings; he got his first tattoo at 18 and now has both sleeved tattoo which he said adds to this look. He also has a lot of piercing- which I guess he has an addiction for!!!

Aesthetic Sounds Live 6th b'day

Went to see J*DaVeY at Aesthetic Sounds Live 6th b'day!!!! I was soooo exited, mad exited about seeing J*DaVeY..I mean i think everyone was... well heres where the story goes in a nutshell... there were FAR TOO many supporting acts before J*DaVeY so when it finally came to them performing the venue had to close...like the sound man cut them right off on their start of their second song!!!!!!! WTF????? Ahhhh Kno!!! Everyone was soooo damn fuming!

THE CROWD and J*DaVeYwere pisssed! But they super super nice to the crowd because the people weren't having it they came to see THEM!! I felt really angry and disappointed cause the ONE song they did do was OFF THE CHAIN!!!! KISS MY TEETH at the event organizer... not only is it a disgrace..but it is rude to have these guys fly all the way from America just to perform this ONE show and they don't get to because of too much time given to the supporting acts before!... Okay rant OVER. I hope they come back to LONDON. The supporting acts were swell really good don't get me wrong and the second Headliner Jesse Boykins III was amazing!!!!... shame really.

Went to see my dear talented friend KADIJA KAMARA perform live at The Station Sessions Festival that has been going on tour around St Pancras International! There has been loads of brilliant artists performing on pop up stages throughout the summer period.

I’m sitting in the small intimate quirky cool restaurant listening to ‘Clap yo hands” By Naught by Nature as I wait for my next artist pal to interview. He turns up prompt on time casually strolling in with his usual inquisitive expression on his face. I ask him what he’s listening to… Thursday – “Waiting”. “Its just a brilliant raw first record rough around the edges with plenty of disjointed melody.” Forever always wanting to be an artist, he always knew it was what he would be doing with his life, “Its my destiny I guess...”

This is my friend, the committed, sarcastic, playful broody Chris Miller.

I ask him how is life is going right now, he describes it to be a bit like the film.. “Clerks”… "Doing a generic day job sucks, and serving the general public is actually a soul destroying profession, I can strongly relate to!”

I can relate to that as well, but anyway back to this interview so at the moment his ART HUSTLE is exploring digital painting, and felt tips. I wonder if there is a particular style to his work?

“I call my style thunder overlord extreme or in layman’s terms I guess it’s a kinda manga, American influenced comic book style, but it changes all the time depending on how I feel, or what’s currently inspiring me but its focused on figure, form, and expression.”

I learn that his early inspiration comes from a few comic book creators, such as Tony Daniels, Masume Shiro and Michael turner.

“Yeah, There are definitely influences in my art from these guys as I’ve always aspired to be as good as them. In recent years Craig Thompson who wrote and illustrated blankets which blew my mind with its beauty and honesty,as well as David Downton the fashion illustrator who just amazes me with his style and is so commercially successful you can see his work all over the place.”

The restaurant isn’t really packed so we decide to stay and continue the interview there. I order another Earl Grey tea; he takes out his sketchbook showing me some of the sketches he has been working on.

"I have been working on concept paintings for a personnel project called girl/robot, where I’m looking into character design, form, beauty and anatomy, which I want to progress into juxtaposition of humanity and mechanics. This will then form the basis and research to be turned into a graphic novel and lead onto massive studio movie deal… you know down the line."

Chris is a fan of Anime and Manga. It brings him back to another project inspired by his love for it.
“I’ve been working on something. It’s a quiet romantic epic. It has a really cool twist set with an epic ether real back drop, exploring relationships and friendships. It’s an honest and moving romance I struggle to put into words as I really want this piece to be the one which people read and think … fuck , like I did after reading Craig Thompsons “Blankets” .

Everyone gets inspired/ influenced by a number of different elements that are revolving around us everyday transforming and expanding our interesting human minds… What influences you creatively?

“Yeah I constantly go to gigs a few each month, music is a massive inspiration to me and can help form ideas and expression with in my paintings, I also went to see a photography exhibition on London street photography dating back to Victorian times which was really interesting, as well as visiting the British museum to look at the roman ruins, and watching Darren brown live was also pretty cool.”

A I finish my tea, I ask the age old Question...WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT WHAT YOU DO?

"I love it because it keeps my demons at bay and gives me a sense of purpose in the world. All my hopes and dreams revolve around my drawing and whether I fully succeed in them or not, it is not something that I can, not stop doing.
At times I have wanted to cut my own hands off through frustration of the creative curse but the love comes from progressively seeing your self improve, and constantly learning new things and experimenting."

I listen to a wide range of music from indie to hip-hop, dubstep to drum & bass, disco to R&B...
Genres mean absolutely nothing to me. If it sounds good to me, I appreciate it. Nothing really influences the music I make apart from the life I fail miserably at living.

WHERE/WHO DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM AND WHY?
Nothing and nobody. Those two are so inspirational, it's ridiculous.

YOU ARE A VERY TALENTED MUSICIAN HOW DO YOU FEEL WHEN YOU HIT THE STAGE WHEN PERFORMING?
Thank you. I still feel with my fingertips predominantly - nothing's changed because I'm a talented musician.
All jokes aside, I still get really nervous but as soon as the first word leaves my mouth, I get into a zone and don't want to leave the stage.

SO WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UP TO CREATIVELY?
I've finished recording 'The Morris Dancer EP' for a July release, I just released a single called 'Summer in the City' on iTunes and I'm spending my time recording my album and gigging.

I'm not. They're into me. One of my little sisters is an amazing artist but we're from a working class family and she couldn't afford a canvas so I offered to be just that.

I'm not into fashion. It's all an elaborate lie. I really want to wear adult onesies that resemble my favourite cartoon characters but my audiences may not take me seriously. Plus I don't think they've made a Stimpy onesie. That said, I've been too busy writing songs to search harder for one.

Artist Spotlight: LIAM BAILEY

I went to see the talented LIAM BAILEY at Water Rats @ Kings Cross last week and let me just say it was brilliant. The venue was just right, small and intimate, and full of folks that came to support good real Music. Liam is a very cool guy, brilliant husky soulful oldschool voice, quirky humour, friendly demour and a generally down to earth dude. I interviewed him a while back (if you scroll back a few older post, check it out) and was really exited to see him play live again!

Strange, Asian, Obsessive, Creative, Hungry. This is my pal JACKIE LEE from London.

When we meet she is listening to Fleetwood Mac's “Rumours” and begins to tell me about this film she was watching the other night.
The Life Aquatic' “I’m constantly searching for something that can't bring me any happiness, but I still look because the idea of it is obsessive and all-consuming."

She ART HUSTLE’s Food journalism & Photography. Photography for about 3 years, food journalism for about a year and a bit as well as writing and sketching which has been with her, her whole life. “24 years of honing the skill!” she recalls.

These days she has been writing food stories and reviews for the magazine she writes for (http://www.arbuturian.com/) and lets all her creativity out on her Food blog (http://iamafeeder.net/) experimenting with food she cooked and how to tell a story with it. “A favourite recently were the oeufs en cocotte I made in a terracotta egg carton. I've been trying to work out a couple of recipes that I intend to use for my cookbook - one is a matcha tiramisu I created for a friend, the other a deconstructed carbonara ravioli.”

I saw an amazing exhibition of Annie Leibovitz's work when I was in Sydney - it was stunning and really inspired me to become a better photographer. And when I saw Of Montreal in London that was just completely incredible. It was so insanely bright, colourful and creative - best gig I've ever been to. If I can see of Montreal in concert every year for the rest of my life I'll die a very happy lady!”

Me & Toyin Kenny (above) and a few others took a Trip to STREETFEST...This event gets better each year, only £10 to get in and there is soo much amazing shiz going on!!

Set in the urban surroundings of Hearn St Car Park, StreetFest presents 10 hours of innovative showcases starting at 1pm through to 11pm. Merging creative talents and modern trends in an interactive experience for visitors of all ages, featuring some of the UK’s top collectives from the worlds of; Music, art, film, street sports and fashion.

The Nextmen headlined this year’s event. This eclectic duo continues to be stalwarts of the UK music scene, consistently carving up shiny gems from London’s urban backdrop. Ghostpoet also performed live for the StreetFest audience. DJs for this event were Marcus Nasty, Rattus Rattus & Klose One (Urban Nerds), DJ Motive, Bounty and bPm.
Lovenskate, Bicycle Union, and Kingdom hit up the 32ft in-built ramp, mock mini t-cup ramp and street course, where we watched in awe as urban sports talent from the worlds of skate, in-line and bmx, flip and trick their way through all day competitions.

I went to support the band I recently interviewed Camouflage Children at the event.. This was my first time seeing them live and they were proper dope.. There set was short and I wish they would have gone on a little later when more people started to arrive because folks were vibing off these talented cats big time. Proud. Glad the South East represented well!

BUT YA KNOW THE MAN CAN PERFORM HAS AMAZING STAGE PRESENCE, CONNECTS WITH THE CROWD AND I HAVE TO SAY HE WASN'T HALF BAD! I MUST SAY THOUGH HIS OLDER TRACKS WERE HIS BEST, ALOT LIKE MOST ARTISTS BEFORE THEY RECORD COMPANY TAKE CONTROL AND COMMERICALIZE STUFF, REELING OUT SHIT THAT AINT REALLY TRUE REAL MUSIC OF THE ARTIST... I'm here with my pal, super coo, artistic, talented and beautiful Sufi and just having a little chat about one of the extremely rad project she did at her University recently.. I was really captured and fascinated by the outcome of the photos so I was set on finding out what went on to create the project, what the theme was, influences and general shiz, so you guys can get inspired and support talented young folk!
The project was entitled 'FASHION STRIKES BACK' hypothetically collaborating star wars characters with London based fashion designers.
"I made C3PO for Giles Deacon, Stormtrooper for Christopher Kane and Darth Vader for Henry Holland.
I also made this photoshoot 3D to celebrate the Star Wars films coming out in 3D in 2012."

So what were What were your initial ideas for this project?
I wanted to have each star wars character costume re-branded and customized to fit today's fashion scene. A lot of people I've come across in the fashion industry haven't even seen the films and have a pre-misconception about them being primarily for male viewers.

What were your inspirations/influences.people/artists/films.. in making this project.
Someone showed me a wicked exhibition called 'The Vader project' where 100 artists were given 100 Darth Vader replica helmets to do whatever they wanted with it. http://www.thevaderproject.com/ so I thought to myself 'I want to do that.'

So what was the duration for this project?
I had 2 months. The longest part was sticking Swarovski crystals onto C3PO's head.

Tell me about the other photos...
C3PO for Giles Deacon is really pretty. The helmet looks better in real life as it sparkles. I turned C3PO into a glamour droid. She wears gold lame and no knickers.
Stormtrooper for Christopher Kane is kickass. She likes to be pretty but isn't afraid to punch the sh*t outta someone. Her catchphrase is "I WILL go to the ball. Motherf*cker."

For Darth Vader by Henry Holland (more my interpretation of Henry Holland) I made a 'Sith Happens' logo t-shirt based on House of Holland's designs. Painted the Vader helmet pink and stuck on huge fake eyelashes et voila! I call her 'Daft Vader; Drag Queen of the Sith.' She's a Diva you see. She has her own pink light-saber too!!!!

Today My Aunt D came around to photograph me for some work she is doing in a gallery, i styled myself (in over-shized red jumper, over-sized jean jacket, dark makeup, creepers, leggings, and some funky ancient earrings she bought along with her) and she shot me with her classic pretty damn cool slr camera...The whole family got in on the scene, taking their own versions of what she was doing. The photo above is one my father took of me and it turned out quite nicely. Hopefully when shes finished in the dark room she i can put them up here and let you have a look..

Heeey I’m here with Yusuf K Mouharrem aka Press1 one half of CAMOUFLAGE CHILDREN
He’s frank, honest and above all, passionate…Trendy to rude boys and like a rude boy to hipsters.

“I hate the term hipster almost as much as I hate the term chav. My father Kemal is my biggest influence when it comes to fashion, a mix of European and inner-city London culture.”

Been involved with music since he bought his first guitar at the age of 8. Hip-Hop and MC wise he's been honing the art of speaking music for about 7 years.

Camouflage Children

Camouflage Children's songs range from everything from drink and drug fueled nights, to the harrowing realization that your girlfriend has gotten engaged to somebody else behind your back. They will either make you laugh, cry or want to dance. Bottom line, there’s so much honesty in their music. Whether a comical track or one that makes you want to peer outside of the window whilst rain taps against it, it will definitely be honest.

So how did the group come together?

The group me and Lenz started last August....At the beginning when we were 15/16 we'd hang out at spots like The Jump Off. We were. Creeping out to Sound, and Scala in Kings Cross after school on a Monday night every week with just enough money to get there, get in and get back. Watching the MC battles was inspirational for me at this point, I knew someway, somehow I had to get involved.

Chapter 1...
So, I was working as an Interactive Producer at the O2 arena. How cool does that title sound? This was a good chapter.
I spotted a sign looking for bands to sign up to a Battle of the Bands competition, regardless of no band members, instruments etc. I inquired and signed up as Press1. I asked Lenz to help with hype man duties with the promise that he’d get to perform some of his songs. The competition was first split into categories; we breezed through the first round against a weird Greek guy who was singing Craig David renditions!

By the time the 2nd round had reached, we’d decided to do it completely 50/50. I’d spit a verse on one of his tracks and vice versa, although I credit Lenz on basically teaching me how to rap - this was the birth of Camouflage Children in essence.

Final round
Which pitted us against 3 very strong groups. We get up and after our 2nd song the CD begins to skip. Not just a quick skip, you know that unbearably jarring and horrible sound you used to get from corrupt files you downloaded from Kazaa? That sound. We had to improvise the entire set with no back up music and thinking back, it somehow worked to our advantage. We ended up winning - studio time and shaking the hands of a lot of people we’ll probably never see again.

THE MIXTAPE
The mixtape, Bangalore Volume.1. is a collection of songs we’ve recorded since last November. It’ll be available for free download from our soundcloud, bandcamp and all other avenues in the next couple of weeks. We recently released a controversial net video for one of the songs, ‘Essex Girls’. A song taking a tongue-in-cheek look at the celebrity culture we blame for such programmes as The Only Way Is Essex.

We’re wrapping up the mixtape at the moment and soon moving into the studio to work on our first official EP release, with nationwide distribution, Itunes, the whole shebang. Prematurely I’d have to predict that the EP will be long and arduous but also the most satisfying to complete and promote.

What can we expect from Camouflage Children in 2011?

Me, Dunstan and Desouza went to see dope rapper MURS at Jazz Cafe in Camden town. British rapper "Stig of the Dump" opened up for Murs with a couple of tracks of his EP, then MURS ripped the stage apart with a mixture of some of his older tracks he did with 9th Wonder and some of his latest mixes off his new album. He did his own rendition of COMMON'S "I use to love H.E.R" which at first i was edgy about because that song is so precious to me and only COMMON can really smash that song, however I respect MURS as a artist so I could rock to it all the same!

DeSouza Kenny and I hit up the V&A gallery for an exhibition called "Shadow Catchers- Camera-less- Photography"
a friend of mine said that It was pretty dope and that me being mad on photography would really like it. However when we went to see it, we were all pretty disappointed. The exhibition was very small and not that interesting to me... Luckily the rest of the V&A is like a beautiful maze that you can get lost in and drift into different parts, finding some truly amazing stuff...

I'm VERY glad to introduce to you a friend of mine from my end of town... A funny, Eccentric, loyal, superannuated, classy, interesting illustrator.

This is SHELDON the creator of his own world, pouring his heart and soul into everything he does, creatively this talented cool artist is one to watch.

What is it that he loves about his ART HUSTLE?
I love how I’m the creator of my own world. It’s entirely up to me what I do, which is rare in a job nowadays.

So tell me about finding out that your passion was in the ARTS...
Since I was 4 years old, It’s something I gravitated to. I was so annoyed with how my Mum drew a Sheep from Rod Jane and Freddy that I angrily snatched the pen and showed her how you draw one properly.

Has there been times where you have taken a break from it or has it been an ongoing process in your life?

I’ve not really stopped since. It seems to have always been there – when I was younger I'd make my own Toys out of junk, a super-man made out of dishcloth, pipe cleaners and some Popoids – which I still have and treasure – but now I focus mainly on the doodling!

I know you have been busy! Tell me about some of the things you have been up to...
I’ve been working on my Webcomic which will be running at some point this year. It’s been going on for seven years on and off.. I have a set of characters who people will instantly recognise as parts of myself.

It’s about dealing with their faults and each other, It’ll be quite meta and catahartic once it gets going. I’ve also been doing some concept pieces for various people, drawing on inspiration from my heroes such as Bill Tiller and Dudley Watkins.

Are there any places or Exhibitions that have influenced you creatively???
I saw some original Ken Reid artwork(original artist of Roger the Dodger and Jonah) at the Cartoon Museum two years ago, and the quality of the line art and the mayhem he infused in the lines are beyond words. Dudley Watkins stuff also impresses me for the sheer scale of his workload, he must’ve been doing at least 8 characters a week for decades and his work never suffered from what must’ve been an enormous workload.

I’m also a die-hard Marilyn Manson fan and seeing him on stage and the imagery he works into his performances is a big idea spinner.

I love the work of the Victorian cartoonist George Cruickshank and William Hogarth. Nowadays people like Joe Quesada, Jamie Smart, Gary Northfield, and Steve Bright are who I look to for stylistic influence, and the bonus is being on Twitter is that I can message them and ask them for advice!

Sounds like the passion for your work is strong, as a fellow ART maker that is ALWAYS good news!

When you pour your heart and soul into everything you do,the end result is almost as if you’ve infused yourself by Voodoo into the finished article. You also know the end piece isn’t perfect, and you keep going to improve your doodles.

Book of the Month: BLACK BRITAN: A photographic History

Its been a while since I've bought a really good book, but i managed to get my hands on this beauty: Black Britain: A Photographic History by Paul Gilroy
It a wonderful account of the rise of Black culture, Music, history, politics, arts and sport dating from 1890 up to today. The book is sad when looking at the photos involving segregation and race riots, however the book shines a light to how far we we as Black people have come. A good read & a MUST read.- J.Erika

It seems like I went to this concert ages away, but It wasn't that long ago.but all I can say was...AAAAMMMMMAAAAZIIING. The whole production of the gig was soooo goood. I mean M.I.A is as you know a very cool unique colourful artist anyways so I mean you kinda gonna expect some sort of mad crazy cool shiz to be going down!! The imagery, performance dancing everything was tight & on point but in like a superly natural way! She really connected with the crowd & you could tell she feeling the vibessss...well she was MAKING THEM! The supporting band Sleigh bells did a bit of a mean set as well!!! Last night. TRAVIE MCCOY. No words can express. What-a-night. Live MUSIC is where its at. Like you know when you listen to a record and your like yeah that's a dope track...well when seeing the artist live just brings you into a whole different Dimension... Bruno Mars & Phillip Lawrence brought the house down with their sweet vocals, instrumentation, charisma and big time swagger before Travie Mccoy absolutely tour the venue down with his tracks from his new record "The Lazarus Project" and a remix of the famous "Cupids choke hold"! Good to see some of the Gym Class fam- DeJesus and Matt (who i got a quick photo with). Altogether a brilliant night. Didn't manage to get any videos, but I have a bunch of photos i took on the night below. Enjoy and keep supporting these dudes!. J-Erika

On SUN OCT 3rd I went to UK SOUL JAM...** Featuring legendary British soul singerOMAR ** + Many more of the finest UK Soul acts (ELISHA LARVERNE, DAVID MENSAH, SHARON ROSE,KADIJA KAMARA, ATLANTA SMITH, GAVIN HOLLIGAN)! The acts brought many elements of SOUL, NEO SOUL, UK SOUL, GOSPEL, RAREGROOVE, NU JAZZ, R&B, BROKENBEAT, HIP HOP, REGGAE, DANCEHALL into their music....it was a ACE ACE night!!! At the end of the event there was open mic jam which was really cool as well! I will be putting up Videos I did of the night soon! Enjoy! - JERIKA

Here is a shoot I did on location near where I live and in a local abandoned field near by. I wanted to create a tropical vibe- experimenting with colour, body and emotion. Does that make sense? I am a HUGE fan of Canada. MAJORLY. Everybody knows that. So I am proud to introduce to everyone a very cool, open and passionate individual from Toronto Canada. Yannick Anton.

Yannick finds himself in all kinds of places learning from everything and connecting to them in some way no matter how odd they are. He’s been working on life, Discipline, organization, staying true to his word. “Its all about that 60s love and doing things your way by any means necessary.”

In getting to know someones I like to know what they are listening to...kinda get a sense of their character... So what are you listening to Yannick?
"Some French women on the train, have no idea what they are saying but it sounds beautiful.”

In terms of music I learn that he listens to a lot of Rick James, Valleys of Neptune, Brenden, Kj, Ayo Leilani, Abstract Random, Spek Won, Syrofoam ones, Marvin Gaye, Rick Ross, Mfp, Rich Kidd, Suite for ma dukes - Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood Ferguson.

His Art Hustle is, photos, stopping time and making things…he officially started Photography a bit over a year ago.

He's been working on a series for http://www.flashforwardfestival.com/about/who-we-are/flash-forward as a part of Schools Without Boarders InSightOut photography residency.

Creating as many photos as he can, Yannick also loves printing and is focusing on a lot of work, keeping the momentum going for a solo show early next year and other shows he has the chance to be involved in.

“I would like to collaborate other creative minds more any see what births. I will be designing a website that shows the way I categorize and think about my work.”

So are there any other places across the world that you would like to work in?
"Allllll over the world... England, France, Japan, Trinidad, New York, Ethiopia, Eritrea, anywhere there are beautiful people!"

Lets talk about the cameras.

“I work with all kinds whatever I can get my hands on. Point n shoot, Canon T70, Mamya 645 4x5, Polaroid land camera, Holga, a little compact Digi, a soul rebel SLR, phone cam… I think the polaroid is my faveourite because its instant film its like the best of both worlds film and digital.”

So where does he find the ideas behind his work?
“The look people give when they are in deep thought… staring at people on the train, Music, the way light changes, the way women move, elegant older women, the class of older men, the energy of performance, music, stories and fantasies of others and
the amazingly creative people Toronto has!”

"The last show that truly made me say wow was my brother Brenden Phillip. I have been hearing the evolution of his sound for a few years and it all fell into the right space and place that night. It was amazing. I run and roam with a crew called 88days of fortune http://www.88days.ca and all of our shows the vibe is always love.... filled with good people and a crazy amount of talent!"

And his advise to young artists, photographers?
"Use whatever you have and can find and look at how beautifully messed up things can be; especially photographers. I heard once the best camera is the one u have when u want to take a photo, no need for the biggest and "best" even though they are so sweet to use!"
